What Is "Anatta": The Meaning of Letting Go of Ego

Many people misunderstand anatta, thinking it means erasing oneself, having no thoughts, or constantly yielding out of compromise. The Buddhist concept of non‑self does not deny our living existence. It helps us realize that the "self" we cling to is a changing collection of feelings, thoughts and memories.

Most of our suffering comes from excessive ego‑attachment. We keep worrying about how others see us, clinging to gains, losses, pride and moods. When everything revolves around "me", endless troubles follow.

Letting go of ego does not mean losing your personality. It means freeing yourself from self‑centered fixation. You can still have preferences and goals, experience joy and sorrow, yet stop taking every hurt as a personal attack. You learn to see others and accept impermanence, instead of being driven by desire and vanity.

Practicing non‑self does not require escaping daily life. Be less calculating in relationships, less absorbed in self‑pity during setbacks. Do not over‑rejoice in gain, nor grieve excessively over loss. Practice awareness in small moments and gradually release tight ego‑driven tension.

True ego‑release brings clarity and inner freedom. It builds empathy and acceptance of life’s changes, rather than passive numbness.
