The Story of Sariputra

The Story of Sariputra

Beneath the Vulture Peak in ancient India lived a practitioner renowned as the "Foremost in Wisdom"—Sariputra. His story did not begin on an altar of divinity, but rather with a persistent, human quest for truth.

Born into a prominent Brahmin family, Sariputra displayed extraordinary intellect from a young age. Yet, worldly knowledge could not fill the void within his heart. He and his close friend, Maudgalyayana, made a solemn pact: whoever found the path to eternal liberation first must immediately inform the other.

The turning point of his life occurred during a chance encounter with a monk on the street. The monk’s composed demeanor and the verse he recited struck Sariputra like a temple bell: "Of all things that proceed from a cause, their cause the Tathagata has explained." This simple teaching on dependent origination instantly shattered Sariputra’s long-standing doubts. He realized that nothing is accidental or permanent; instead, everything exists in a state of constant flux and transformation.

After joining the Buddha's Sangha, Sariputra became not only the embodiment of wisdom but also a paragon of humility. Despite being a leader among the disciples, he was known to quietly clean meditation halls to ensure others' practice remained undisturbed. His wisdom bore no sharp edges; it was like a serene lake, reflecting the confusion of sentient beings and offering quiet guidance.

The life of Sariputra is the most vivid interpretation of the phrase "the wise are free from delusions." He teaches us that true wisdom lies not in winning arguments, but in perceiving the ultimate reality of the universe—and, through that perception, cultivating boundless compassion for all.
