The Foremost in Miraculous Powers: Maudgalyayana and the Compassionate Rescue
In ancient India over two thousand years ago, two disciples stood as the primary pillars of Shakyamuni Buddha’s sangha: Sariputra, the foremost in wisdom, and Maudgalyayana, the foremost in miraculous powers.
Maudgalyayana was renowned for his profound meditative concentration and inconceivable supernatural abilities. He could traverse vast distances in an instant and observe the hidden mysteries of the six realms of rebirth. Yet, this awakened being, capable of moving mountains and seas, demonstrated through a timeless legend the limits of power against the law of karma, and the ultimate redemption found in compassion.
Miracles vs. Karma
After attaining Arhatship, Maudgalyayana’s first thought was of his late mother. Using his divine eye, he was heartbroken to find that due to her past greed and ill-will, she had been reborn in the Realm of Hungry Ghosts—emaciated and suffering from eternal hunger and thirst.
Using his powers, Maudgalyayana manifested a bowl of exquisite food and offered it to her. However, the moment she tried to eat, the food turned into scorching flames. Despite his vast abilities, he could not extinguish the fire fueled by her own karma. Stricken with grief, he sought the Buddha’s guidance.
The Buddha told him: "Your mother's karmic roots are deep; the strength of one person alone cannot rescue her. You must offer a feast of a hundred flavors to the virtuous monks of the ten directions on the final day of the summer retreat. Only through the collective purity and merit of the Sangha can she be liberated from the ocean of suffering."
The Origin of the Ullambana Festival
Maudgalyayana followed these instructions faithfully. On that day, through the immense collective merit of the practicing monks, his mother was finally freed from the hungry ghost realm and ascended to the heavens. This event marks the origin of the "Ullambana Festival" (Ghost Festival).
Maudgalyayana’s story is more than a tale of filial piety; it imparts a profound truth: supernatural powers are but the leaves and branches, while karma is the root. True liberation lies not in physical flight, but in the transformation of the mind. He remains not just a symbol of miracles, but an eternal embodiment of devotion and compassion.
