Samadhi: A Supernatural Power, or Our Most Ordinary Mind?
Share
In the popular imagination, "Samadhi" is a word shrouded in mystery. It is often associated with hermits in remote mountains, levitation, or some form of supernatural enlightenment. This begs the question: Is Samadhi an unattainable superpower, or is it actually our most ordinary state of mind—one we already possess but have simply failed to recognize?
The Illusion of "Superpower"
From an external perspective, Samadhi certainly looks like a superpower. When someone enters a deep state of Samadhi, they exhibit incredible focus, absolute emotional stability, and an immunity to sensory distractions. In this state, the passage of time slows down, and the boundaries of the self dissolve. To those of us living in a modern world of noise and fragmented information, such profound balance and insight feel nothing short of miraculous.
Rediscovering the "Ordinary Mind"
However, many enlightened masters teach us that Samadhi does not grant you something new; rather, it removes the impurities that distract you.
True Samadhi is, in fact, the most ordinary mind. This "ordinariness" does not mean mediocrity or boredom; it refers to the state of "things as they are." Imagine the surface of a lake:
• When the water is turbulent, it cannot reflect the true moon.
• When the water is perfectly still, the moon appears naturally.
We don't need to "create" the reflection of the moon; we only need to allow the water to return to its original stillness. Samadhi is this primordial awareness, undistorted by delusions, fears, or expectations.
Integrating Practice into Life
If Samadhi were merely a "superpower" experienced only in a cave, its value would be limited. The true power lies in bringing this focused, clear "ordinary mind" into every breath: to wash dishes completely while washing dishes, and to listen fully while listening.
When we stop trying to escape the present moment and cease the frantic pursuit of sensory stimulation, that total, prescient peace emerges naturally. You then realize that the greatest superpower of all is the ability to sit firmly within your own life, possessing the most ordinary and clearest of hearts.
