Palden Lhamo: The Fearless Mother-Protector of Tibet
Share
Today, on the 15th day of the 10th Tibetan lunar month, practitioners throughout Tibet and the Himalayas honour Palden Lhamo—the only female among the great Dharma protectors and the principal guardian deity of Tibet. This day is believed to be the one time each year when her presence becomes especially vivid and accessible.
Who Is Palden Lhamo?
Palden Lhamo (Tib. དཔལ་ལྷ་མོ་, “Glorious Goddess”) is the fierce, wrathful manifestation of the enlightened feminine. Known as Śrī Devī in Sanskrit, she embodies:
- Unshakable protection
- Removal of obstacles
- Sharp, fearless compassion
- Guardianship of wisdom and spiritual progress
Her imagery—dark blue body, flaming hair, riding a wild mule across a sea of blood—symbolizes the power to destroy ignorance and negativity at their root.
Why This Day Matters
According to Tibetan tradition, the 10th-month full moon is the most auspicious day to offer prayers to Palden Lhamo. Monasteries and households perform:
- Khata offerings
- Protector prayers and torma offerings
- Incense and smoke offerings (sang)
Pilgrims believe that on this day, Palden Lhamo reveals her form to the world once a year, and whatever aspirations are offered reach her swiftly.
A Protector for All Beings
Despite her terrifying visage, Palden Lhamo is regarded as a fierce mother—one who protects practitioners, clears obstacles, and supports those seeking a meaningful, awakened life. Her wrath is not anger; it is compassion in its most powerful form.
