Finding a Beam of Light Amidst the Mists of Bardo
Share
"Bardo," in ancient wisdom, refers to the state of being "in-between." It is not merely a transition between lives, but a metaphor for those moments in our own lives where we lose our coordinates, where things remain unresolved, and where we are engulfed in a dense fog. We have all experienced such moments: the old world has collapsed, yet the new world has not yet taken shape. You stand in this grey mist, unable to see where you came from, and unable to find the way home.
The Mist: Present Hardships
During this stage, anxiety often stems from "uncertainty." We are accustomed to certain tracks—the next job, the next relationship, the next goal. Once these anchors disappear, we fall into the mists of Bardo. In this fog, sounds are muffled and directions are blurred. You may feel a loss of identity: "Who am I if I am not in my current profession?" You may feel as though time has frozen, as if trapped in a twilight that never wakes. More than anything, you feel the fear of the unknown: deep within the mist, is it an abyss or the far shore?
The Search: Guidance of the Light
Light never appears only after the fog has cleared; it breaks through the cracks the very moment you decide to open your eyes. To find light within the mists of Bardo is not to rush out of the fog immediately, but to establish a tiny sense of order within the chaos.
First, accept the state of "not being there": Acknowledge your current confusion. Do not rush to define the future; give your soul a gap to breathe.
Second, listen to your inner intuition: When external references vanish, the only compass left is your heart. That light is often the truest longing buried deep within you.
Third, take tiny actions: In a thick fog, you cannot see a kilometer ahead, but you can see the single step beneath your feet. Take that step, and the light will extend forward with you.
Awakening: The Mist is a Baptism and a Rebirth
Bardo is not the end, but an immensely creative space. It is precisely because old labels have been stripped away that you possess the possibility of reinventing yourself. The mist is not meant to make you lost, but to teach you how to see yourself when you can no longer see the outside world. When you no longer fear this void, you will discover that you yourself are the light that pierces through the mist.
Everyone has a period of awakening, but the timing of that awakening determines not only one's destiny but even one's very survival. If you are currently in the midst of this fog, do not be afraid. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and feel that faint light slowly rising from the depths of your life.
